CAR T-cell therapy is a type of treatment that harnesses the body's immune system to fight cancer. CAR is short for Chimeric Antigen Receptor, which enables T-cells – a type of white blood cell that is crucial to immune response – to recognize and efficiently kill specific cancer cells.

Here's how it works: T-cells are taken from the patient's blood and then genetically modified in a lab to produce receptors on their surface called CARs. These CARs are able to recognize a specific protein (antigen) on tumor cells. The modified T-cells, now known as CAR T-cells, are then multiplied in the lab before being reinfused back into the patient.

Once inside the body, the CAR T-cells seek out the cancer cells and kill them. This therapy has revolutionized the treatment for certain types of cancers, such as acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and multiple myeloma.

Although CAR T-cell therapy has brought about significant progress, it also has some limitations. It's currently only available for certain types of cancer, and not everyone is a suitable candidate for this treatment. Additionally, it can cause severe side effects, including cytokine release syndrome (CRS), which is a systemic inflammatory response caused by the activation and proliferation of CAR T-cells.

In spite of these challenges, researchers are optimistic about the potential of CAR T-cell therapy. Ongoing research is aimed at improving the safety and efficacy of this treatment and expanding its use to other types of cancer.
