Moreover, growing evidence suggests that essential oils may have beneficial effects on mental health by influencing the central nervous system (CNS). This impact mainly encompasses mood, cognition, and behavior, thereby bringing potential implications for the prevention and treatment of psychiatric disorders.
The effects of essential oils on the central nervous system and mental health are mainly attributed to their bioactive constituents, such as terpenes and phenolic compounds, which can cross the blood-brain barrier and interact with neuronal and glial cells in various brain regions. These constituents exert their effects through diverse mechanisms, including modulation of neurotransmitter release, nerve growth factor signaling, antioxidant defenses, and inflammatory pathways.
Several studies have shown that essential oils such as lavender, chamomile, rosemary, and peppermint have anxiety-reducing, antidepressant, and neuroprotective effects.
